Evelyn Virginia Ross Cotter, 92, died March 2, 2010, at Hospice House,
Hutchinson. She was born March 15, 1917, in Racine,
Ohio, to Verne &
Jesse Quillan Ross.
She grew up in Racine, Ohio, & graduated from Middleport High School
in 1935. She had been a Hutchinson resident since 1948, moving from
Zanesville, Ohio. Evelyn had worked as a bank clerk and was a
Hutchinson Public School USD 308 secretary for 16 years, but her
primary interests were her family and homemaking. She handcrafted
her daughter's clothes from kindergarten through college.
On November 21, 1942, she married John B. "Jay" Cotter in
Columbus, Ohio. He died October 14, 1998. She was also preceded
in death by her daughter, Carolyn Ann Schmucker. She is survived by
a son, John B. Cotter, M.D., & wife Perrine, San Luis Obispo, California;
son-in-law, C. Paul Schmucker, Soldotna, Alaska; a sister-in-law,
Edna C. Boetcher, Zanesville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Neils Cotter &
wife Elaine, Jeremy Cotter, Paul D. Schmucker & Julie C. Roberts
& her husband, Daniel; two great grandchildren, Noelle & Nicolas Roberts.
Her memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010,
at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson. Burial will be private in Fairlawn Burial
Park.
Friends may sign her register 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday & Monday at Elliotts.

Marie Hubbard, Mother of Mary Jane
(Hubbard) Dreher has passed.
Marie Hubbard, 88, of Hutchinson, died July 31, 2009 at
Dillon Living Center. She was born May 17, 1921 at Lawrence, the
daughter
of Oscar B. & Lila Mae Ousdahl Botts. She was a Hutchinson resident
since
1950 moving from Lawrence. She was a 1938 graduate of Tonganoxie HS &
a 1942 graduate of Lawrence Business College.
She was a member of First Congregational Church.
Before her marriage she had been a beautician in Lawrence.
Primarily a homemaker she had also worked at Coberly Drug at both
Northgate & 13th and Main locations.
On August 31, 1941 she married M.E. “Gene” Hubbard at Lawrence;
he died October 9, 1972. Survivors include two daughters; Mary Jane
Dreher
(Felix) of Pittsburg, Judith Ann French (Larry) of Hutchinson, two
sisters;
Dorothy Dwyer of Lawrence, Betty George of Independence, MO,
three grandchildren; five great grandchildren. Marie was preceded in
death by a brother Jean Botts and a sister, “Deannie” Laming.
Memorial service will be 1:00 PM Monday, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home,
with Pastor Matt Stafford presiding. Cremation has taken place.
Friends may sign the book from 1:00 PM to 5:00PM at the funeral home,
the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

S. Amstutz, father of Mark Amstutz has passed.
WICHITA - Mahlon S. Amstutz,
93, loving & devoted husband, father, & g/father,
went to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 23, 2009.
Mahlon graduated from Asbury College in 1939 & pursued further training
for
ministry in New York. In 1941, he married Ruth Behnke of Bushton.
He took pastorates for several years in Omaha & Meadow Grove, NE.
From 1945 to 1987, Mahlon & Ruth served as missionaries in Chile.
Following retirement, they lived in Bradenton, Florida for 20 years,
remaining involved in church planting and community and prison
ministries.
In 2007, they moved to Wichita, where Ruth preceded Mahlon in death in
Oct. '08.
Survivors include: sons, Drs. Mark and Donna Amstutz, Wheaton, Ill.,
Dr. Samuel & Carol Amstutz, Wichita, & Mr. James and Karie Amstutz,
Minneapolis, MN.; daughters, Carolyn Mizzau, Buenos Aires, Argentina,
Nelda & Rev. Paul Johnson, Quito, Ecuador; brother, Jonathan & wife Anna
Lou;
sisters, Lois Bryan & Elizabeth & husband Rev. Olan Hendrix; g/children,

Mother of Doc Gingerich,
Katie Gingerich Crow passed May 17, 2009,
at Hospice House, Hutchinson at the age of 93.
Katie was born March
14, 1916, on the family farm near Yoder, to
Chris A. & Polly L. Wengard Miller.
A lifetime resident
of Reno County, she worked for the city of
So. Hutchinson from '58 to '76, & then with her family in the
auction
business until retiring in 1989.
On June 25, 1938, she
married Joe E. Gingerich in Hutchinson.
He died Oct. 19, 1983. On Jan. 14, 1990, she married Kenneth
F. "Ken" Crow, in Honolulu. He died Sept. 30, 2001.
Survivors include:

Ronal L. Gingerich & wife Jenny, all of Hutchinson; stepdaughter,

Beardon has passed.
F. Elwanda (Bearden) Curley was born May 17, 1929, in rural
Sharp Co., Ark,,
to William (Bill) & Estie Harrison Bearden. She died peacefully at
home on
May 3, 2009.
Elwanda was a member of Eastwood Church of Christ.
She married James L. Curley on June 17, 1961. Elwanda worked for the
FBI before moving to Hutchinson to teach school, starting at Sherman
Jr High.
She taught for many
years in the Hutchinson School System until retiring.
She was a life member of
KNEA, a teacher's organization.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; a step-son, Arlie Curley of San
Diego, CA.;
three sisters, Tommie
(Jack) Richardson of Ash Flat, Ark., Elaine Collins of
Pocahontas, Ark., Linda
(Buddy) Day of Opelika, Ala.; & three brothers,

Leita A. Ewing, mother of Kent Ewing has
passed.
Leita A. Ewing, 91, died April 30, 2009, at Promise Regional
Medical
Center, Hutchinson. She was born Aug. 25, 1917, in Penalosa, the
daughter
of Wesley & Ethel Hartley Jones. She graduated
from Penalosa High School
in 1934 & received her teaching certificate in
1936 from Fort Hays State
Teacher's College. For six years she taught 1st thru 8th grades in a
one-room schoolhouse in both Reno and Kingman
Counties.
She was an Avon representative for over 30 years.
A Hutchinson resident since 1950 she was a member of First Presbyterian
Church & Ark Valley Good Sams Camping Club. She
enjoyed playing
games particularly 10-point pitch, bingo and
dominoes. She loved bowling
& was an avid fan of Hutchinson Blue Dragon
Basketball & attended
faithfully for 57 years.
On May 5th, 1940, she married Kenneth T. Ewing in Penalosa. He survives.
Other survivors include: son, Kent Ewing & wife Marti, Hutchinson;
daughters,
Trudy Crupper & husband Phill, Sugar Land, Texas, and Becky Cole,
Lakewood, Colo.; sister, Maxine Wooldridge & husband Edward of Ulysses;

Marvin Castor, father of Phillip Godina
has passed.
Marvin Castor, 94, died April 29, 2009, at his home, Hutchinson.
He was born July 26, 1914, in Rio Grande, Zacatecas, Mexico,
the son of Rafael & Alvina Ordaz Castor. He was a longtime
Hutchinson resident, moving from Mexico when he was eight years old,
first to TX, then to Larned, Kansas. He was employed with Barton Salt,
now Cargill Salt, retiring after 40 years of service.
He belonged to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, K of C,
Am. Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361,
Holy Name Men's Society of the church and G.I. Forum. He was a
U.S. Army veteran, serving as a PFC in World War II in the 317th
Infantry
Regiment, 80th Infantry Division.
On Oct. 2, 1948, he married Isabel Raya in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: sons, Phillip Godina & wife Karen, Hutchinson,
John Castor & wife Anita, Wichita, David Castor & wife Vanita,
Hutchinson, Andy Castor, Randy Castor & Tim Castor & wife Margie,
all of Hutchinson;

Father of Carol (Landrith)
McNaught, Hurschel Landrith has passed.
Although Carol passed in 1976, Hurschel retained contact with
many in our class. He was a good friend of our class especially to the
boys on the baseball teams he coached.

2009.
Born in Arkansas City, Kansas, he was the son of James A. & Clara
(Dellenbaugh) Landrith, & loving husband of Martha E. (Williams)

April 17, 2009 at 10:30 AM. A graveside service will follow at the

Dorothy E. Woods, mother of Suzzane (Falk) McGuire has
passed.
Dorothy had played a big part in many of our lives.
She not only taught
dance but mentored
& maintained a life long contact with several of you.
Dorothy E. Woods, 98,
"Teacher of The Dance," died April 4, 2009, at
Wesley Towers, Hutchinson.
She was born June 26, 1910, in
Beloit, Kan., the daughter of Walter W. &
Mary "Susie" Sparks Woods.
She graduated
in 1928 from Hutchinson High School, in 1930 from
Hutchinson Community College & received an Advanced Drafting Degree
from the University of Kansas in 1942. She was the owner and operator of
Dorothy E. Woods School of Dance, Hutchinson.
She belonged
to First Presbyterian Church, was a 50-plus-years member of
the American Legion Women's Auxiliary Unit No. 68, and the Women of
the Moose Hutchinson Chapter No. 1371.
She married
L.L. "Bill" Falk. He died March 25, 1995. Survivors include:
a daughter, Suzanna McGuire and husband Joe, Hutchinson; & 3 g/daughters,
Pam Myers & Kindra McGuire, both of Hutchinson, & Mendy McGuire,
Chicago.
She was
preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lemen & Marian Woods.
Funeral will
be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson,

Hershel Tincher Gum,
father of Sonya Blount Chambers 87, died
March 15, 2009.
He was born Feb. 1, 1922, the son of Charles Bush Sr. & Berta Marie
Means Gum.
He retired from the City of Long Beach Gas Company, Long Beach,
Calif.
He has lived in Sterling for the last 29 years & worked at the
Sterling Post Office.
He was a member of the Sterling American Legion. In 1938 he joined
the CCC
(Civilian Conservation Corps). He was a World
War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He married JoAn on April 9, 1966. She survives. Other survivors
include: son,
Gary Rosensteel, St. Louis, Mo.; daughters, Sonya Chambers, Topeka,
Carolyn Bennett, Hutchinson, Sheila Miller, Eureka Springs, Ark.,
Susan Ziegler

She spent her lifetime in Hutchinson, working with her husband
at his veterinary
clinic for 49 years.
On May 29, 1941, she married Dr. J Carlyle Symns in Hutchinson.
He died Jan. 24, 1997.

School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam Conflict.

Hutchinson. She survives.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Joseph M. Reed Sr., 67,
died Jan. 5, 2009,
at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born Dec. 17,
1941,
at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson, Ks, the son of Howard (Ray) & Vera
(Gagnebin) Reed.
A longtime resident of Hutchinson, he retired from the City of
Hutchinson after
29 years as Supervisor for the Street Department.
He was a member of the Salt City Cruiser Car Club, & was an avid car
enthusiast with a passion for restoring old cars & trucks. He loved
to show
cars at car shows, bowl, throw horseshoes & laugh & joke with his
family &
friends. He will be missed by all.
On Aug 3, 1960, he married Bernice "Bea" Katherine Briggs. Survivors

She was born Jan. 4, 1937, in Hutchinson, the daughter of James Albert &
Mary E. Burch Henry.
She attended Hutchinson schools & was a homemaker in Hutchinson.
She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
On Oct. 15, 1977, she married David Lee Inghram in Hutchinson. He
survives.

Joan C. Cully, 81, died Nov. 23, 2008, at Reno
County Hospice House.
She was born Sept. 5, 1927, in Hillsboro, KS, the daughter of
Ira & Edith F.
Garwood Dole. She was a 1945, graduate of Hutchinson High
School, and a
1960 grad. of the Adela Hale Business College, Hutchinson. A
Hutchinson
resident for over 64 years, she was an office assistant for more
than 22 years
in the Reno County Em. Management Office.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was
active
in her Church Circle.
On May 29, 1970, she married Donald Cully in Hutchinson. He
survives.

Kenneth G. Black, 88, died November 1, 2008, at

Kenneth was the father of Birdella Black-McKenna.
He was born October 23, 1920, in Green Castle, Pa., the son of William &
Mary Ida Showalter Black. He
served in the United States Army and was a
loyal supporter of many
military charities.
A resident of Hutchinson for 66 years, he worked at the flour mill for
17 years,
and retired from Bunge
Elevator, where he was a galley worker.
On August 5, 1940, he married Mary Katherine Southworth in Hutchinson.
He graduated from Salt City
Business College in the late 1950s.
He was a member of the
Community Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Katherine Black, Hutchinson; six

Dr. Donald Coyne, brother of Julie Coyne Johnson-Cassady

He battled cancer for many years. He was a 1954 graduate of HHS and
had been recognized on the school's Wall of Honor in 2006.

Fred W. Baker Jr., 92, died
Sept. 25, 2008, at Hearthstone Assisted Living Center in Okla. City.
He
was born Oct. 11, 1915, in Nelson, the son of Fred W. and Prudence M.
Hicks Baker. He resided in Oklahoma City, but lived in Hutchinson for
many years.
Graduating from Pittsburg High School, Pittsburg, in 1933,
he later graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1937. He lived in
Ft. Scott from 1948 through 1955, when he moved to Hutchinson. He was an
insurance agent and CLU with Prudential Life Insurance Co. for 31 years.
Prior to World War II he was a high school and junior college teacher
and basketball coach for nine years.
He belonged to Trinity United
Methodist Church, Hutchinson. He was employed by the
U.S. Government during World War II at the Rock Island, Illinois
Arsenal, San Antonio, Tx., Arsenal, Ogden, Ut. Arsenal, and the
Philadelphia, Pa. Arsenal.
On Aug. 17, 1943, he married Joyce M. Downard
in Pocatella, Idaho. She died Jan. 6, 2000.
Survivors include: a son,
Fred III, and his wife Natasha, Auckland, New Zealand; two daughters,
Nancy Mueller and husband Peter, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Carolyn Rowan,
Edmond Okla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery
& Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with Pastor Jeff Slater presiding.

She did volunteer work with the Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary &

Red Cross. She was active in support of Brownie Scouts, Girl Scouts,
Cub Scouts, & activities of her children at Roosevelt and Morgan
Grade Schools. She had a lifelong interest in painting, Hutchinson
Art
Association, golf & music. She loved to travel In the U.S.A. and
Europe.
On June 25, 1932 she married Harry H. Dunn
in Hutchinson.
He died Sept. 24, 2004.

He died Sept. 21, 1979.

Joe Krafels, 82, died April 2, 2008, at Hutchinson Hospital after a
sudden illness.
He was born Aug. 4, 1925, at Scammon, the son of Joe & Nona Johnson
Krafels.
He graduated from Winfield High School & Wichita State University.
He was a teacher & coach at Hoisington High School, coming to HHS in
1956,
where he was the basketball coach for 12 years & served as Director
of
Student Activities until retiring in 1988.
Joe belonged to the First Baptist Church; the National Education
Association,
Hutchinson Retired Teachers Association and was inducted into the
Kansas State High School Activities Hall of Fame in 1990.
On Nov. 23, 1949, he married Jane Wheeler at Oxford. She survives.

Ellis W. "Buss" Thomas, father of
Sharon (Thomas) Oller, passed on March 12,
at the Good Samaritan Center. He was 89 yrs old, born Oct. 10, 1918,
in Teresita, Mo., the son of Albert Harney and Beulah Pauline George
Thomas.
A longtime resident of Hutchinson, having lived in Sun City,
Ariz., from 1981 to 2007, then returning to Hutchinson,
he was a grain broker with Bunge Grain Co.
He belonged to Sun City Christian Church,
Veterans of Foreign Wars,
American Legion and the Elks Lodge. He served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II.
On March 17, 1940, he married Irma Fleming. She
died Sept. 11, 2004.
Survivors include: a son, Terry and wife,
Linda, Hutchinson; two daughters,
Marty Thomas, Torrance, Calif., and Sharon Oller and husband, Tom,
Kansas City, Mo.;
four grandchildren, Wendy Pierce, Dennis Oller, Trish Spencer and Keri
Julian;
and 13 great-grandchildren, Jordan Alvarez, Ryan Pierce, Katelynn,
McKenzie,
Jersey and Mark Spencer Jr., Kristin, Amanda, Heather, Zach, Nathan,
Tabitha
and Skylar Julian.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia
Thomas.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at
Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with
Jimie-Wray Mead presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the mortuary.
Entombment will be in Sunland Memorial Park Mausoleum in Sun City, AZ.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to
the Good Samaritan
Center in care of Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Victor Sisk's mother,
Virginia M. Sick passed March 2. 2008.
Virginia
Marion Sisk, 88, died March 2, 2008 at Hospice House.
She was born December 4, 1919 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the daughter of
Charles and Veda VanSchuyver Allen. A resident of Hutchinson, she
retired in
Lakewood, California, returning to Hutchinson in 1999. She was a
homemaker.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lakewood, CA and the
First Baptist Church, Hutchinson. She married Harold V. Sisk on August
7, 1938 in
Hutchinson. He died March 19, 1996.
Survivors include 2 sons Victor and wife Dianne, Lawrence and David and
wife
Kathleen, Hutchinson, 3 sisters, Dolly Kenny, Barbara Mroczkowski, and
Beverly Herman, all of California, 5 grandchildren, Lisa Crites and
Matthew Sisk, both of Hutchinson, Susan Goheen, Wichita, Lesley Sisk,
Houston, TX, and Darrin Sisk, Belvidere, Ill., and 11 great
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Albert and Harold Allen.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Fairlawn Burial
Park,
Hutchinson, with Pastor Bob Albin presiding. Visitation will be held
from 1-9PM
Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory, Hutchinson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Village,
in care of the funeral home.

Harold D. Dufek, Step Father of
David Wilson, passed on February 9, 2008.
He was born November 15, 1921 in
Noble County, Oklahoma, the son of Emil
Dufek & Petra Elvrum Dufek. He moved to Hutchinson in 1933 after
living in
Oklahoma and Texas. He earned his Batchelor's Degree in Accounting
in
1947 at KU. He was a World War 11 Veteran and continued to serve in
the
Army Reserves until 1974. He retired as a Colonel & received the
Legin of
Merit Award for distinguished military service. He was well known in
Hutchinson
as a businessman and civic leader.
On June 22, 1941, he married Elsie
May Jones in Hutchinson.
After World War II, they returned to Hutchinson where their five
children were
born and attended school. She died March 18, 1979 after a lengthy
illness.
On October 6, 1979, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Paine Wilson, who
had
been a lifelong friend of both Harold and Elsie May. Betty and
Harold were
happily married until her death on February 1, 2003. Harold often
expressed
that, with his two marriages, he had been blessed with "60 years of
wedded bliss."
He was especially proud that his five children and Betty's three
children formed
strong family ties.
Survivors include four daughters and
one son: Julie (Dan) Howland;
Linda Dufek Lake; Nancy Dufek; Mary Dufek; and John (Debbie) Dufek.
Other survivors
include one stepson and two stepdaughters: David (Susan) Wilson,
Beverly Wilson (Pat Halstead), and Karen (Pat) McLain. He had
seven g/children
and five g/grand children, four step g/children & two step
g/children.
Memorial service was
held at The Park Place Christian Church, Hutchinson,
February 12, 2008, with Pastor Kim Berry presiding. A private family
burial of his
ashes at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum followed the
service.

Patricia Lee Hester , wife of Tom Hester passed on
January 13, she was 58.
After a long battle with illness, Patricia
Lee Hester went to be with the Lord
on January 13, 2008. She was born on August 27, 1950 in Oregon
City,
Oregon to Byrum and Genevieve Lee.
Pat was a longtime El Paso resident and found much joy in her
family and
her career as an elementary school teacher.
Patricia is survived by her husband,
Thomas W. Hester; her daughter,
Allison Page (Bernie); her son, William Hester; her father,
Byrum C. Lee (Wylodean);
sister, Barbara Zinn (Ed); brother Byrum Lee, Jr. (Valerie).
She was preceded in death by her mother, Genevieve Lee and
sister, Virginia Lee Stiles.
A memorial service will be held on

Geraldine Veta "Gerry"
Dragoo Shelton, mother of Sharon Dragoo-Harris
died, Jan. 5, 2008, at Wesley Towers Thorne Care Center, she was 88.
She was born Jan. 15, 1919, at Harper, the daughter of
Jack and Mable Bowen Vines.
She graduated from
Wichita North High School in
1936; she was a resident of
Hutchinson since 1946. She
was a retired CNA at Wesley Towers
and a restaurant operator of
numerous establishments,
including the former
Spotlunch on East 4th Avenue.
She belonged to Crossroads
Christian Church, Hutchinson,
Sweet Adelines and Red Hat
Society.
On March 24, 1938, she
married Frank William Dragoo at Wichita.
He died April 27, 1984. On
April 20, 1978, she married Chuck Shelton.
He died Oct. 13, 1982.
Survivors include: a son,
Dennis W. Dragoo and wife Elsie, Emporia;
a daughter, Sharon K. Harris
and husband Jim, Lyons; two brothers,
Bob Vines, Washington, Bill
Vines, Rose Hill; three sisters,
Peg Anthony, Wichita, Pat
Davis, Kent, Wash., & Nancy Vines,
Portland, Ore.; 10
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Vines.
